UPDATE (4:15 PM): San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is out of the hospital a day after he was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery.
The attack took place on saturday near San Francisco’s Union Square, in the center of the downtown area.
Authorities say at least two rounds were fired during a fight between pearsall and the teenage suspect, who was also hospitalized.
The 49ers posted on social media Sunday that Pearsall was released from the hospital and “continues to recover from a bullet wound to his chest.”
The high-profile attack comes as crime and homelessness in San Francisco have become paramount topics in local politics.
San Francisco Mayor London Breed says officers were stationed all around Union Square and responded quickly to the situation.
“Our officers responded within a minute of the situation and there are officers especially on weekends and even a holiday weekend there are officers all around Union Square more so than any other community in the city which is why the response did what it should in a case like this. They were out there, they were able to respond quickly, and they were able to apprehend this suspect.”

The district attorney says her office is planning to file charges in juvenile court next week due to the suspect’s age.
SAN FRANCISCO (NBC, KYMA/KECY) – NFL star Ricky Pearsall was shot during an attempted robbery in San Francisco Saturday.
Mayor London Breed confirmed the incident on social media, and said that the attack took place in the Union Square community in the center of downtown.
San Francisco police said officers responded to a report of a shooting around 3:37pm, and found two people who had been injured after an altercation. One of the people was the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver while the other was the attempted robber.
San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin’s office confirmed that Pearsall was shot, but is in stable condition.
The suspect, identified by authorities as a 17-year-old boy from Tracy, California, is in custody and charges are pending at this time.
During a press conference, officials noted that the city will not tolerate such acts and those who commit crimes in the city will be held accountable.
“It should be clear one that the police department in this city will do its job to make sure that those who are committing any crime, let alone a crime like this, are caught. And I also want to make it clear that when that happens and my office takes over, that there will be accountability for those who commit these types of acts in San Francisco. We are not a city that will be tolerant of these of this type of conduct.”
